    The Lioness Club of Urbandale is open for membership to anyone in the central area and they meet the 3rd Thursday of every month at the Lions Park Shelter house located on the corner of 72nd and Prairie Avenue at 7p.m.

    The service club donates monthly items to help various charities and collects eye glasses/hearing aids for those who need assistance. They have a brunch first Sunday in March for the Urbandale scholarship foundation and help with Lions bingo/fish pond during July 4th celebrations. Their annual Saturday holiday/bake sale in November raises funds to use for charity. The club enjoys visiting and dessert at the end of every meeting. Guests are welcome to visit and see what our club is like, so call for information.

    This post was formed in the early 1940’s and the Legion Hall at 68th and Douglas was built shortly afterwards. The American Legion is the largest patriotic organization in the world. The Urbandale Post has performed many services for the community.

    The Urbandale Community Adult Band is organized for the purpose of providing an adult recreational and learning experience, and to provide entertainment to the community. We are a community band that plays concerts in the Des Moines and central Iowa area. We play music ranging from big band to marches to polkas.

    We have added as part of the band, a smaller group called the Urbandale Community Adult Swing Band.

    The Children's Cancer Connection, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, has provided support services and programs for children with cancer and their families since 1988. The organization sponsors two week-long summer camps for children with cancer and their siblings. Approximately 300 children attend the annual camp programs designed to help them briefly escape cancer’s effects. The Heart Connection Children's Cancer Programs also provides support groups, outings to events such as Disney on Ice, and weekend retreats for an additional 450 family members throughout the year.

    The Urbandale Fourth of July celebration is spearheaded by the 4th of July Committee. Urbandale becomes a center of attraction on this holiday. There is a parade, Jaycee’s bathtub races, games, booths, concession stands, rides, dance, the best local display of fireworks and many other activities held at Lions Park.

    Leadership Urbandale is an eight-month class designed to increase community awareness and involvement, as well as improve overall leadership skills of participants. Curriculum topics include Urbandale History and City Government, Visionary Thinking, Economic Development, Education, Government, and Arts and Entertainment.

    Classes are generally held on the first Thursday of each month from October through May from 5:30 to 8:30pm. The enrollment fee is $250 and includes meals and supplies.     The Adopt A Trail progam is an all-volunteer program open to any individual, group or business that provides Urbandale citizens with an opportunity to become involved in conserving and maintaining the many miles of bicycle and walking trails threaded throughout the community. Volunteers are expectated to pick up litter a minimum of four times annually, or more if necessary. Also, you can serve as an extra set of eyes for the Parks and Recreation Department to watch for downed trees/branches, reporting maintenance issues, etc

    Located in the Lion’s Park Shelter House, the Urbandale Caring Corps is a volunteer based organization whose mission is to provide opportunities for Urbandale residents to help fellow residents and continue to remain a “caring, connected community”. The Caring Corps provides transportation to medical appointments, the Senior Center, grocery shopping assistance, companionship, yard work assistance, handy man services, and tutoring in the schools. Our goals include enhancing the independence and quality of life of the elderly and those with long term health care needs and supporting the schools. Volunteers are matched with individuals and groups requesting assistance.

    The Urbandale Community Adult Band is organized for the purpose of providing an adult recreational and learning experience, and to provide entertainment to the community. We are a community band that plays concerts in the Des Moines and central Iowa area. We play music ranging from big band to marches to polkas.

    We have added as part of the band, a smaller group called the Urbandale Community Adult Swing Band.

We pride ourselves in being a community theatre of the old school, one of volunteers.

    The Urbandale Historical Society is a non-profit corporation, organized in November 1976, for the purpose of preserving Urbandale’s history and memorabilia. In June 1987, the Society purchased the lovely old Olmsted-Urban House, located at 4010 70th, for its headquarters and for the enjoyment of Urbandale people. School, youth and group tours can be arranged.

    Membership is open to anyone interested. Volunteers are needed for historical research and work at the house.

    The Urbandale Lion's Club started in September, 1945, and is affiliated with Lions International. It is a service organization, and has cooperated with other community groups in many worthwhile projects for our city. The 10-acre city park at 72nd and Prairie was one of the club’s early projects. The club sponsors an annual Homecoming Pancake Day, a Light Bulb Sale, and 4th of July Bingo tent.

    The Urbandale Optimist Club is affiliated with Optimist International. Meeting the needs of young people in communities worldwide, Optimist Clubs have been "Bringing Out the Best in Kids" since 1919. Optimist Clubs conduct positive service projects aimed at providing a helping hand to youth. Club Members are best known in their communities for their upbeat attitudes. By believing in young people and empowering them to be the best they can, Optimist volunteers continually make this world a better place to live. Some of the noted local projects includes: Community Service Avenues of Flags, Essay Contests at the high school, feed the youth at the homeless youth shelter, and much more.
